October 30th

Image text: Not enough houses on your block? Just hit them at 30-year intervals from here to 2300 and get 10x the candy.
First of all, because Doc Brown uses the phrase "overshot", he is travelling back in time to maximize his candy intake. Which is opposite of the image text which proposes going forward in time to trick or treat as many times as possible.
Secondly, I cannot get the rhyme, "Great Scott, I must have overshot!" out of my head.
EDIT: And as kb says in the comments the character is Emmett "Doc" Brown from the Back to the Future series, who's catch phrase was "Great Scott!".

And of course we all know that this is referring to Doc. Brown from ‘Back to the Future’, right?

Why must “overshot” refer to a travel *back* in time. I would think overshot would refer to any time travel (for these purposes) where you wind up further away from your start time than you intended. Undershot would be when you wind up closer to your start time than you intended. It would work that way regardless of which temporal direction you were traveling.
Regardless, I love explain xkcd. Almost as much as xkcd.

Ah … you’re assuming (and rightly so, I believe) that it is referring to an Oct 30 relative to the closest Oct 31, which would require a travel back in time.
Of course, he *could* have overshot by 364 days (or 365 for a leap year). But that’s probably not what was intended.
Sorry, we had layoffs at work yesterday. I probably wasn’t thinking clearly. Yeah, that’s what I’m going to blame…
