I Am

by Jeff

Image text: Great, LO-M. Do you speak Bocce? I'm supposed to find one that speaks Bocce.

The text in the first frame is a biblical reference as Abraham, Isaac and Jacob are all people from the Bible.  The closest quote would be Exodus 3-5.  The quote is from the burning bush passage in the Bible.  It is possible the plant at the end of the tunnel could be a burning bush.

This comic is making an insinuation that the voice of God or God itself is C3PO from the Star Wars Universe.

In the Image text, the quote is from Star Wars: A New Hope in which Luke's uncle says the last two sentences of the image text to C3PO to make sure he speaks the same language as the moisture vaporators on their farm.  Booce is the language spoken by those moisture vaporators.

The use of LO-M looks to be a double reference to Elohim which is used as the name of God in the Jewish religion and the LOM series droids from the Star Wars universe.

The tunnel could signify the Large Hadron Collider and the search for the "God" particle.  The two particles falling behind the character in the first frame seems to signify that.

  1. It’s actually aunt Beru that says: “Luke, tell Owen that if he gets a translator to be sure it speaks Bocce.”

    The vaporators used “binary language”.

  2. I think those “particles” are actually Moses’ sandals. He took them off because he was on holy ground.

  3. I think the “tunnel” is actually just rays of light/magicness. See the rock above the character’s leg?

  4. I dunno if “this comic is making an insinuation that the voice of God or God itself is C3PO from the Star Wars Universe.” It might just be that “I am that I am” has a machine-like cadence and could (in the way that almost *any* word or phrase starts to sound “funny” if you say it to yourself too many times) remind you of “see three pee oh” or “arr two dee two”.

But who knows where comic ideas really come from; that’s just what came to my mind when I read it.

  5. This is genius.

  6. I think he’s implying that R2-D2 is a deus ex machina in the movies.

    • Good point. R2 DOES seem to always be there to open whatever door needs opening, or shut down whatever garbage compactor is on the detention level. Etc.

  7. Fact 1: It’s indeed the burning bush passage, and that stuff is god’s magic that dind’t let Abe look straight into it.

Fact 2: C3PO is an Ewok god.

  8. I think this comic is a play on how in detail God describes Himself in Exodus and comparing it to another long winded figure.
As someone studying to be a priest, I find it hilarious.

  9. Yet another unfunny xkcd, what a surprise.

  10. Your erudite analysis of the ambiguous details of this hermetic comic is so … biblically ironic.
