The genetic algorithm is a search technique in computer science used to find solutions to problems. It is an evolutionary algorithm so it goes generation by generation until it gets the solution. As we can see in the comic, sometimes it takes longer than others.
By the way that is "meals" in the comic, not "mepls", even though it looks like "mepls".

I’ve only just stumbled across this site precisely because I was wondering what MEPLS were. I even “do” computer science and use (basic) GAs…

If it had been MEPLS I would think they were using M as Mega as in 10^6 and EPL as Evaluate-Print-Loop as in the one for LISP which is used for AI programming

I was wondering how Middle Earth Programming Language had anything to do with those screwed up recipes.
