Analogies

by Jeff

Image text: I just call all of them 'synecdoche'.

Let's recap middle school English class, link style!

Metaphors are the comparison of one thing to another without the use of like or as : “A man is but a weak reed”; “The road was a ribbon of moonlight.”

Similies are a common figure of speech that explicitly compares two things usually considered different. Most similes are introduced by like or as : “The realization hit me like a bucket of cold water.”

A synecdoche is a figure of speech in which the one of the following (or its reverse) is expressed:

* A part stands for a whole
* An individual stands for a class
* A material stands for a thing

  1. Why does it look like she is running in the third frame?

    • In the first panel she’s announcing her intention to go make a sandwich. In the third panel the other two continue the discussion of the distinction between metaphors and similes while she leaves, and in the third panel she’s making a sandwich off-stage.

      I don’t think she’s running in the 3rd frame, but is walking off, leaving the other two to discuss analogies whilst she’s dealing with her needs.

  2. Well, you exlained only three of the terms involved, but some are still missing …
    What is an analogy?
    What is a sandwich?
    … just kidding. ;-)

  3. I’m still not sure a sandwich is not intended as a metaphor for something in the first frame.

  4. So explain this … they they want that sandwich or not?
