Sample

by Jeff

Image text: There are two or three songs out there with beeps in the chorus that sound exactly like the clock radio alarm I had in high school, and hearing it makes me think my life since junior year has been a dream I'm about to wake up from.

This one is pretty straightforward.  There is nothing worse than the standard alarm clock sound unexpectedly in a commercial or song.

  1. Aaaaand cue the people who are going to come and complain that it’s not detailed enough. But honestly, I can’t think of how to make a detailed analysis of this.

    • He could always go with painfully explaining every bit of the comic, such as…

“The term sample in music refers to…
… In this comic the driver is clearly annoyed by the sound of what seems to be a car horn in the middle of the tune which he was enjoying.”

    • My question is, is this a reference to a specific band or song? I haven’t heard any like this.

    • I think it’s explained plenty – for *me*. But then, I drive and have experienced the phenonemon myself. Others might not have done.

Bear in mind that I’m one of the people who have, in the past, asked for a more comprehensive explanation when the main post hasn’t been detailed enough. Just because it’s explained well enough for you doesn’t make it explained enough for everyone. (The same applies to me, which is why I made sure to emphasise that above.)

  2. I just came here to find out what song that is.

  3. Me too, PogiJones.

  4. Could anyone point to a youtube video exemplifying this, or some other sound sample of the effect? I don’t recall ever noticing this. Maybe those alarm sounds are not “standard” after all?

  5. The worst though is when they have a siren like an ambulance or cop car sound in the song.

    • Yes! That is my biggest complaint, too. It’s pretty obvious that your alarm clock isn’t going to come speeding down the road, but I am always looking frantically for an ambulance to pull over for during some of the newer hip-hop songs.

    • Yeah, I hate that. D:

  6. “Black Box” by the Rolling Stones contains a car horn, but I can’t think of any songs (although I know I have heard them) with a “Beep” for an ostinato.

  7. There’s a particular Michelle Branch song (”1000 Miles”?) that has something that sounds like a distant police siren randomly inserted in the song. While driving when that song came on, I would keep turning around to see if I was speeding, or had to get out of the way of an ambulance. That really irritated me.

  8. Not quite the same thing, but the band Type O Negative (R.I.P. Peter Steele) released an album called October Rust. The first track was called “Bad Ground”. This referred to the humming sound that someone hears when poor grounding creates a ground loop in an audio system. The intent was to fool people into thinking there is something wrong with their stereo.
