| titletext = Now, if it selectively kills cancer cells in a petri dish, you can be sure it's at least a great breakthrough for everyone suffering from petri dish cancer.
}}

Explanation
incomplete

Cancer is one of the most feared sicknesses due to high mortality. Therefore, whenever researchers find a hint for cure, this is hyped in media as major breakthrough. However, in laboratory scale one uses only cultivated cancer cell assays in petri dishes or well plates, thereby preventing influences by or on other parts of a whole body. Current anti-cancer drugs affect all cells, thereby causing severe side effects. The same applies to new drugs developed as well; if they affect cancer cells they may also affect healthy cells and the side effects may prove to be too severe for the drug to be used as a viable treatment method.

As title text suggests, that is not the only problem a new drug can have. For example, it may not be able to get to those cancer cells. It is a long way from the laboratory to the pharmacy.

Transcript
| titletext = Ron Paul wants to put the New Republic back on the Corusca gem standard.
}}

Explanation
This comic refers to the concept of fandom, which is basically the collective noun for fans of a given thing. Usually, this is used in the context of people who like a certain work of fiction, like Star Trek or Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Here, a man digs through a box and discovers his old collection of Star Wars books, referring to authors Timothy Zahn and Micheal A. Stackpole (who wrote several Star Wars novels), and The Corellian Trilogy. These books are part of the Star Wars Expanded Universe, which is used to refer to media that is Star Wars-related but not actually a part of its canon.

The boy apparently loved these books as a kid, which prompts a nearby girl to remark if he starting becoming a fan of other science fiction series like Firefly or Battlestar Galactica, to which he clarifies that he simply grew out of the fandom mindset. The girl asks him about how politician Ron Paul (who has appeared in the comic several time), and the boy excitedly runs off to check, ironically disproving his earlier remark - people don't outgrow a fandom state of mind, but rather shift their point of interest.

The title refers to the New Republic, the main government in Star Wars after the final film, and Corusca gems, which are extremely rare and valuable gems from the aforementioned expanded universe. The text says that Ron Paul wants the New Republic to adopt the Corusca gem as standard currency.
The comic is very simple: Randall apparently has a realization about the time in which he lives in (at the time, anyway), given that he grew up in a time where the 2000's seemed very far away, but he now exists in that timeframe with the rest of society.
Explanation
The comic depicts an average everyday scene - a party, with drinks, dancing, and a lot of commotion going on (hence the title). Amid the chaos, though, there are two people, a girl and a boy, staring wistfully at each other. They both think of the same scene: the two of them sitting on branches of a large and bare tree, doing something on laptops. The implication is that these two kids are special - they don't derive their enjoyment of life from parties or other typical teenage activities, but rather simpler, more quiet activities.

The title text presents a simpler joke - it is rather difficult to get down from a tree, especially when carrying a fragile item like a laptop

Explanation
The skateboarding subculture has taken up the phrase "skateboarding is not a crime" in protest of how many cities have banned skateboarding in certain areas, such as parks. Randall apparently really does not like these stickers and states that when he becomes president, any and all displays of stickers bearing the phrase (like the one on the locker in the comic) will be considered a felony, though skateboarding itself will still be legal.

The title text also shows another protest phrase, "Arrest me, I'm a skateboarder", that Randall hates even more than "skateboarding is not a crime".

Explanation
In the comic, Randall expresses excitement for the time in the future where he can intentionally misuse modern-day slang in order to make nearby teenagers feel uncomfortable. The comic illustrates this using the word "pwned", which means "to be beaten", as in "I pwned that other guy badly at ping pong!"

Many teenagers believe their parents to be not "with the times", but Randall suggests that parents actually do know what the words mean, but are acting otherwise in order to mess with their heads. The title text reinforces this, as every generation has had some form of slang that they used, and it could be possible that this practice has been continued for a good while.

Explanation
Operation is a board game wherein one attempts to remove the organs of a patient with a pair of tweezers. The game is notoriously hard, because of the fact that the organs are quite small, and because if one bumps the side of the patient, a buzzer sounds and the patient's nose lights up. Players generally consider the buzzer quite annoying.

In the comic, a child swallows the buzzer, and the joke lies in the similarity between the game and actual surgery when the buzzer is brought into the mix. The title text brings this further by describing an incident where the doctor ended up removing several organs (the object of the game, but obviously not a good idea in real life).
Explanation
Operation_(game) is a board game wherein one attempts to remove the organs of a patient with a pair of tweezers. The game is notoriously hard, because of the fact that the organs are quite small, and because if one bumps the side of the patient, a buzzer sounds and the patient's nose lights up. | titletext = Once, long ago, I saw this girl go by. I didn't stop and talk to her, and I've regretted it ever since.
}}

Explanation
The base part of the comic is self-explanatory: Girl attracts Boy, Boy notices Girl, Boy approaches Girl, Girl reacts positively, Boy falls in love, Girl decides to answers lovecall, happily ever after etc. The quirk in this comic is the way Girl catches attention of Boy in the comic: through the signature move of 1980's rapper MC Hammer (the slide). To watch MC Hammer doin' the slide, click here.

The title text indicates that Randall once saw a girl go by and regrets that he did not speak with her as Boy does in this comic. The title text is unclear whether Randall is stressing the word "this". It is possible that the girl Randall is referring to was actually doing the slide.
| titletext = This is true. The lyrics are ridiculous.
}}

Explanation
The song on the radio is "Welcome to my life" by Simple Plan (not A Simple Plan), which was released in 2004 as a first single to the band's second album "Still not getting any...". The lyrics of the song mainly deal with the frustration of adolescence, e.g. Life becoming real. Many, if not all, adolescents go through a phase were the ongoing realisation of becoming fully responsible for their body, mind and personality beyond parents scares them. While longing to the simple childhood of the past, this also reminds them that this is what they wanted as a child in the first place.

The above paradox leads to teenage angst, graphically displayed in the song, which questions quality of life, and therefore maybe taking the "Simple Plan" and terminating life because it lacks this quality. Cueball, obviously beyond this phase, first hears the pop-song, liking it for it's addictive sound, and then realising the lyrics may turn some adolescents into bodybags.
| titletext = We have this conversation at least once a day in my apartment
}}

Explanation
In the comic, one Cueball angrily asks "Where's my fucking jacket?". Normally, one would attempt to provide information on where the jacket is.

The second Cueball, however, has taken the adjective "fucking" to mean that he has a "fucking jacket", separate from his normal one. He thus answers that is next to the first man's normal one. The first man is confused, so the second one dismisses the subject. Kind of a waste of time, really.

The title text suggests that this event transpired frequently in Monroe's (real life) apartment.

| titletext = It's fun to watch browsers fumblingly recapitulate the history of window management. Someday we'll have xmonad as a Firefox extension.
}}

Explanation
This comic is a parody of the "Get a Mac" (also known as "I'm a Mac" or "Mac vs. PC") ad campaign for the Mac brand of computers. The ads personified the Mac and their competitors, the PC. The ads poked fun at the PC's terrible function while paying attention to the Mac's unique features. Each ad started with the duo introducing themselves as "I'm a Mac..." "... and I'm a PC."

The comic, however, presents them as identical to each other, since everything nowadays is done through browsers. (It could also be taken as a riff on xkcd's simplistic style, as they are literally identical.)

The title text refers to window management, which is software that controls windows on computers. xmonad is one such program, and Russel says that eventually it will be an extension usable with the browser Firefox.
}}

Explanation
The comic shows an elaborate, albeit useless, plan.

A duck and her ducklings walk somewhere. Cueball scares the mother duck, so she starts running away, her children following her in a line. Then Megan snatches the mother duck, leaving the ducklings confused and walking around in a loop. Hence the caption at the end - "Operation: Duckling Loop."

The title text refers to a meme called "Duckrolled", where one would post a link to a picture of a duck on wheels. It became much more famous in its later incarnation as the Rickroll.
| titletext = An eternity later, the universe having turned out to have positive curvature and lots of mass, the boomerang hits him in the back of the head.
}}

Explanation
This comic is a sequel of sorts to 445: I Am Not Good with Boomerangs, as it deals with the same subject manner with the same panel layout.

The first strip has a man throwing a boomerang, which doesn't come back. (It's implied to have come back to either him or another man 464 comics later in 939: Arrow.)

The second strip has the man throwing another boomerang, which somehow hurts the ozone layer (as indicated by an offscreen voice).

The third strip has the man throwing what appears to be a boomerang, but then Megan appears and reveals that it was their last banana. "You're such an asshole," she notes.

The final strip has the man throwing one last boomerang, which busts through the panel and flies out of some spaceship-looking thing.

The title text notes that the boomerang would return and hit him in the back of the head thanks to the universe's curvature and mass.

[The man seems shocked.]

[The man throws what appears to be a boomerang, but then Megan arrives.]

Megan: That was our last banana.

Megan: You're such an asshole.

[The man throws the final boomerang, which smashes through the panel and into space somehow.]
