"Explain like I'm five" is a way of asking for a simpler explanation of some difficult topic — a concept [[Randall]] has explored [[1133: Up Goer Five|previously]]. This is inspired and apparently misquoted by the [http://muse.tau.ac.il/maslool/boidem/54groucho.html famous quote] "''Why a four-year-old child could understand this report! Run out and find me a four-year-old child, I can't make head or tail of it.''" See also Groucho Marx at ''{{w|Duck Soup (1933 film)|Duck Soup}}'' from 1933.

[[Megan]] takes it literally by acting as if [[Cueball]] is an actual five year old. A five-year-old kid standing miles away from home without his parents talking to a strange woman is worrying, so Megan pretends to panic and asks where his parents are.

The title text continues this. Megan acts as if Cueball is 5, and asks where his parents are, and when Cueball attempts to respond to Megan's questions, she asks him to speak as if ''he'' is five.

| title     = Orbital Mechanics
| image     = orbital_mechanics.png
| titletext = To be fair, my job at NASA was working on robots and didn't actually involve any orbital mechanics. The small positive slope over that period is because it turns out that if you hang around at NASA, you get in a lot of conversations about space.
}}

==Explanation==
[[Randall]] roughly plots how high school physics, undergraduate-level physics and a job at {{w|NASA}} somewhat increased his knowledge of {{w|orbital mechanics}}. But this learning was apparently nothing compared to the "direct" experience of playing with the ''{{w|Kerbal Space Program}}'', a rocket building and piloting {{w|open world|sandbox game}}.

Orbital mechanics can be somewhat counterintuitive. The art of changing orbits involves relative velocities, positions, and times in complex interactions. As soon as you try deviating from a perfectly regular orbit, or start having to deal with {{w|N-body problem}}s and {{w|orbital resonances}}, you have to coordinate your movements in possibly in counterintuitive ways. One example is just, if you want to reach an object ahead of you at the same orbit you have to brake to reach a lower orbit. At that lower orbit your velocity is faster and you can overtake that object in front. After that maneuver you have to accelerate for increasing your orbit high and reducing your speed matching your target.

At the title text Randall admits that at the time when he did work at NASA he was not involved in orbital mechanics — which is also true for the most other NASA employees — but everybody was talking about this without a significant increase of knowledge.

The {{w|Kerbal Space Program}} was featured as one of the frames in the [[1350: Lorenz]] April Fools project and in [[1244: Six Words]].

==Transcript==
:How Well I Understand Orbital Mechanics:
:[There is a graph with the x-axis labeled as 'time' increasing to the right. The y-axis is unlabeled but it can be assumed that it could be labeled 'understanding'.]
:The line stays flat until the first bump, which is annotated "Took High School Physics".
:The line decreases, then grows to a higher maximum with the annotation "Got Physics Degree".
:There is a small amount of decrease until a gradual bump in the graph labeled "Actual Job At NASA".
:It gradually decreases to pre-NASA levels, but then begins to increase exponentially. The annotation reads "Started Playing Kerbal Space Program".
UPDATE: it appears to be a bug in the XSRF-blocking code. Chrome console shows me the error "XMLHttpRequest cannot load http://c1.xkcd.com/graph/1/. A transcript is going to be futile. It appears as though the comic may go on indefinitely (I've definitely had some branches continue extending until I've seen frames that were present in other branches). I suspect what's happening here is that... options are "suggested", and those suggestions are displayed at random to people. The ones with the most clickthroughs begin to appear more often, until eventually the top 4 are "locked in" and no more suggestions can be made. Very creative! But I'm not convinced that Randall is making frames in near-real-time, nor am I even convinced he's part of the approval process at all. I suspect it's all automated. Currently there appears to be a bug. Instead of the evolving, crowd-sourced comic, I just see an off-center copy of the previous comic, 1349: Shouldn't Be Hard. [http://i.imgur.com/pw2OfOL.png Screenshot here].
UPDATE: it appears to be a bug in the XSRF-blocking code. Chrome console shows me the error "XMLHttpRequest cannot load http://c1.xkcd.com/graph/1/. The 'Access-Control-Allow-Origin' header has a value 'http://xkcd.com' that is not equal to the supplied origin. Origin 'http://www.xkcd.com' is therefore not allowed access."
FURTHER UPDATE: you can work around this bug by going to http://xkcd.com instead of http://www.xkcd.com!
It also doesn't work if you have HTTPS Everywhere enabled.
::Well I think you are correct - that it is a girl. However you can NEVER use text in the comic to decide - because it is user created - I could have written the same line with guy instead of girl! ;Images
I created [[1350: Lorenz/Images]] with all the images I could find in the comic. I'm not sure if I should have left them in the main page [[1350: Lorenz]], but feel free to decide what to do with them. Also, I tried using the tag <nowiki><gallery></nowiki>, but I couldn't make it work, so I used a lot of divs. [[User:Daniel Carrero|Daniel Carrero]] ([[User talk:Daniel Carrero|talk]]) 23:23, 2 April 2014 (UTC)
;Many-worlds interpretation

The title text "Every choice, no matter how small, begins a new story" might as well be a hint to Hugh Everett III 's "Many-worlds interpretation"
of quantum theory. {{unsigned ip|108.162.219.74}}
::Can't it be both? The Butterfly Effect can be seen as one consequence of the Many-Worlds interpretation. A choice as simple as whether (or where) a butterfly flaps its wings can send our entire universe down a different timeline, in which a hurricane occurs. ::Well I can see it was me. We obviously disagree with what could be a trivia item and with which categories should be included even obvious ones. There has before been mention of missing pieces of hats etc and when there is one in hundreds of images with an error then it could make a fun trivia item in my opinion! I will stop editing and let you decide what to do with this comic? [[User:Kynde|Kynde]] ([[User talk:Kynde|talk]]) 22:30, 4 April 2014 (UTC)
{{incomplete|Not comprehensive or especially informative.}}
A {{w|YouTube}} party is when a group of people show eachother YouTube videos. The problem with YouTube parties is that no one pays attention to the video that's playing; instead, they're thinking of the video they should watch next. The title text shows one of the people in the party remembering of another video they find more interesting and trying to put it on so the party can see it, the joke being that the other people are just as disinterested and really just want the party to watch their video.
