}}

Explanation
Brian Eno is a musician and a co-founder of the Long Now Foundation. He is explaining to an audience that one of the missions of the Long Now is a Manual for Civilization - a collection of reference materials that can help rebuild society in case it collapses. But in Randall's version, the experts have made a list composed of many books from the Animorphs series.

Animorphs is a series of books written by K.A. Applegate. It follows a group of five children (later, an alien joins as the sixth member), that try to stop the parasitic aliens, the Yeerks, by transforming into animals. A Yeerk that enters a human has complete control over their host, and can read their memories. Because the Yeerks can imitate their host almost perfectly, humanity is slowly being taken over without knowing it, and for this reason the children cannot contact the authorities and are on their own in the battle against the Yeerks.

When asked if all the books on the experts list are from the Animorph series, Eno misses the point of the question by saying No!, only to mention the List_of_Animorphs_books#Companion_books books and The Andalite Chronicles, both of which are side stories to the Animorph universe.

There are other books like these which aren't mentioned here — but it is clear from the last two panels that it is a quite long list — and it seems to be written in two columns, so maybe all List_of_Animorphs_books#Animorphs_main_series and all List_of_Animorphs_books#Companion_books could be included on the list.

In suggesting that a series of children's novels make up the blueprint for rebuilding civilization, Randall is spoofing the idea of such libraries (since such books would be largely useless in terms of providing the detailed instructions that would be necessary). At the same time, he may also be sending up a recent controversial article from Slate (magazine), which suggested that adults should be ashamed of reading children's literature, by having a popular children's work be considered crucial to rebuilding civilization.

The title text makes it completely ludicrous by saying an entire wing of the library will be devoted to the The Attack (Animorphs) where Animorphs#Animorphs finally KISS!!!

This comic may also be inspired by Isaac Asimov's The_Foundation_Series, where Hari Seldon claimed that the Galactic Empire is going to collapse in three hundred years, there is no way to stop it but his group of scientists are writing Encyclopedia Galactica to help people rebuild civilization.

*The Long Now Foundation was mentioned recently in 1340: Unique Date.
*Animorphs was referenced before in the title texts of 1360: Old Files and 1187:_Aspect_Ratio.
| titletext = They'd convince me to come out of retirement for one last job: biting into a giant lump of slightly soft wax a couple of times.
}}

Explanation
Cueball is presumably asked to answer the typical HR interview question: What is your dream job? Rather than going with the more common answers that are designed to increase the chances of landing that particular job, Cueball talks about unrealistic jobs that are fun, whimsical, and so well compensated that a little over one hour on the clock would provide enough wealth for a luxurious retirement; of course, you can have such a job only in your dreams. Peeling lint off dryer traps is quite funCitation needed, but it gets boring soon, so Cueball wants to do that only for 5 minutes, followed by pressing a lightsaber handle up to things (this does not exist yet, sadly) for an hour. Then Cueball would like to retire to a life of luxury, and the only way to bring him out of it is to offer him to do another fun task till he gets bored again.

The lightsaber part is most likely a reference to the beginning of Star Wars Episode I, where Jedi Qui-Gon Jinn does exactly this.

Transcript
:[Cueball is talking to a woman sitting behind a desk]
:Cueball: It would start with five minutes of peeling lint from dryer traps
:Cueball: Followed by an hour of pressing a lightsaber handle against things and switching it on.
:Cueball: Then I'd retire to a life of luxury.

When people ask me to describe my dream job, I'm never sure how realistic to be.
}}

Explanation
None of the comics are actually explained
At 5:30 AM, one sometimes comes up with things that seem like nonsense later.

None of the twelve panels in this comic seem to have any correlation with one another, each one being its own "story," and none of them really make any sense. It is unknown whether Randall really wrote this comic while awake at 5:30 in the morning, or if he wrote it while completely alert, and as a way of saying what one's mind may experience when trying to process information at an hour when the person is not used to being awake.

The title text could actually refer to two different panels. If a person chooses to read the comic left-to-right, top-to-bottom, the eighth panel could be the one with where Cueball asks "Does being a mermaid for five minutes make you gay?" However, if a person chooses to read the comic top-to-bottom, left-to-right, the eighth panel will instead be the one with Cueball hanging upside down shouting "Bachelor party!"

### DOCUMENTATION ###

--></includeonly><noinclude>
This is the basic infobox-style header template used to display xkcd comics on their own pages, including the comic number (with external link to xkcd), publication date, title, comic image, and title text.

Sample
The following is a sample usage of this template:

Usage
Notes
* At least the number, title and image are required.
* The date should be written in the form: January 1, 2006
* The imagesize field is optional.
** The comic's width will be limited to the set size. Format must be in pixels (eg: "350px")
** The comic's height may be set by adding an 'x' to the start (eg: "x350px")
** Warning: If the size is larger than the image, the image will be stretched.
* before is a special field for inserting text before the comic. One use is for extremely large comics (e.g. Umwelt), to skip to the explanation.
* If the custom field is not empty, the image field will be ignored and be replaced with any text that you put in the custom field.

The above sample is produced by the following code:

{{comic
| number = 16
| date = October 4, 2005
| title = Monty Python -- Enough
| image = monty_python.jpg
| titletext = I went to a dinner where there was a full 10 minutes of Holy Grail quotes exchanged, with no context, in lieu of conversation. It depressed me badly.
### DOCUMENTATION ###

--></includeonly><noinclude>

Explanation
"Punch Buggy" is a game played by two people with a view of traffic (often, but not here, during a car ride). For each Volkswagen Beetle that passes nearby, the first player to see it is entitled to punch the other player, while calling "Punch Buggy" followed by the colour of the spotted Beetle. Traditionally the other player is permitted to return the punch, unless the first player also calls "no punch back".

Many people will just assume that the game is always being played and punch you out of the blue, giving you no chance to opt out. Implicit in this game is the idea that you can make rules just by declaring them (e.g. "no punch back") even if those rules are ridiculously unfair. When Cueball realizes this, he decides to make the game stakes more desirable than just the right to punch someone, and (seemingly successfully) uses the same principle to secure the right to sleep with the other man's girlfriend.

The title text describes how silly these games are.

Transcript
:[Two men are sitting. A yellow buggy passes by.]
:Man: Punch buggy yellow. No punch back!
:[Man punches Cueball, Cueball punches man back, with seemingly greater force, causeing the Man to fall of the bench they are sitting on.]
:Cueball: Punch
:Man: I said no punch back!
:Cueball: You can do that?
:Cueball: Man, this changes everything.
### DOCUMENTATION ###

--></includeonly><noinclude>

Explanation
The picture rotates every 15 minutes with the Earth, showing which regions are currently at which times of day, ignoring Summer Time (aka Daylight-Saving Time) and local variations in Time Zones. (However, the cities and countries listed in the picture follow these local variations.)

Every 15 minutes (so far, and presumably forever), the image changes. The names used for the image files refer not to Universal Time as one might expect but rather to the time exactly 12 hours off of that. The picture change seems to happen half-way through a 15-minute time increment (so at 7½ minutes after the hour, then 22½ minutes, then 37½, 52½, and repeating), so that the picture is always correct for the nearest multiple of 15 minutes.

When first posted, the picture was exactly 12 hours off. (The name of the image file linked from the page matched Universal Time, rather than being 12 hours off as explained above.) Somewhere around 5:10 UTC (so about 10 minutes after the comic was posted?), this was fixed.
:That would be apt. Dammit Randall, why couldn't you have made the comic one image so it'd be easy to put up here? :::If I've calculated it correctly (from the core numbers of prime factors extracted from the set of millisecond cycles extracted below by the script), a single image that contained each and every cycle (exactly as they are individually, without fudging any of them to avoid awkward factors) before repeating from the start again would have a total duration of 8.74E+056ms. (That's around 2.77E+046 years!) I haven't worked out how many frames that would require (at approx 300kp, each, before compression)although I would hazard a guess that most (if not all of them) would probably sustain at a duration of no more than a single figure of milliseconds.
:::You might be able to make a more efficient and vastly smaller representation with the .swf format, but I've not used that for a while so might have forgotten some limitations that would apply in that event.
:::(Realistically, recreating the array of individual images is the best solution you have. Another case where Randall goes outside the 'traditional' single, simple image format, and messes with everyone's automated XKCD-strip-grabbing scripts, no doubt. At least this time round. ;) 141.101.99.41 02:02, 19 February 2014 (UTC)
I would like to point out a few things: the title text refers to an experiment that shows a piece of tar, if I remember correctly, which looks like a solid material, dripping very very slowly. It takes a year or more for a drop to fall, and there should be a live stream of it somewhere, I think.

The second is the turning signal being out of sync with the other car. Randall made a comic about that one already. It's a recurring thing.Dulcis (talk) 07:57, 17 February 2014 (UTC)
;Technically possible

Technically you can create an animated GIF that will repeat every 10 years. The standard says that maximum interval between frames is 65535*0.01 seconds, so to create a 10-year video you'll need 31557600*10/655.35=481538 frames. Since GIF registers only changes pixels for each frame, most of these frames will be empty (I'm not sure about the size, but around 20 bytes), so the whole file would be around 9.6 megabytes. Please include this in the explanation (possibly correcting numbers). --Zverik (talk) 13:18, 17 February 2014 (UTC)
: @Zverik; Any reason you not just adding that to the explanation yourself? Spongebog (talk) 20:31, 17 February 2014 (UTC)

Update: Randall used some Adobe software to create highly redundant animated GIFs (with a color profile written to every frame). The thing is, frames are not equal, they gradually change brightness, so each frame is written anew and takes 3670 bytes (measured with oldfaithful.gif). So the estimate for 10-year animated GIF with that software would be 1.77 gigabytes (1.65 GiB). That would be too much indeed. --Zverik (talk) 13:51, 17 February 2014 (UTC)

: Still, there are only 166 shades of gray between black and the default gray. So all it would take is an additional 166 bigger (in terms of number of bytes) frames. That he uses inferior software is no excuse. --108.162.254.181 14:58, 17 February 2014 (UTC)
:I'll hazard a guess here by saying that multiple references to a common item using unrelated topics is a comedic element in itself! ::I don't understand this problem. The HTML-Code is just from the main page, it doesn't explain your problem. I did add all the GIF images yesterday, and for entering all that links in an easy way I changed this table layout to an easy WIKI-Table. In my opinion all the sortable tags should be removed, this is not increasing the depth at this explain. But this is still an open task here, yesterday I just did focus on all the missing GIFs here. --Dgbrt (talk) 22:53, 18 February 2014 (UTC)
108.162.231.121https://www.explainxkcd.com/wiki/index.php?title=1331:_Frequency&diff=604681331: Frequency2014-02-18T22:19:23Z
108.162.231.121: This should work, even though it's ugly, ugly, ugly.
Explanation
Incomplete.
This comic shows a number of common events, arranged in a grid. Each of the events flashes with their average frequency.

For example, statistically a child is born somewhere on the world approximately every 0.24 seconds, or four times per second. Therefore the tile "One birth" blinks about 4 times per second.

The table below lists all the events and their duration / frequency. Some events make reference to other comics.

The title text refers to the Pitch drop experiment which measures the flow of a piece of pitch over many years. At room temperature, tar pitch flows at a very slow rate, taking several years to form a single drop. The title text jokes that Randall tried to include a tile that flashes about once every decade, but the tiles are all Animated GIF and the file format does not support animations that long.
According to our figures, 6881 Amelias drink 1,44 million liters of soft drinks per year in the United States alone, which means that Randall's figures only account for American Amelias (drinking 356 cc or 12 fl. oz. of soda in each drink).
