		+	:I've further modified it, though in keeping with your statement. Because the rapid boiling off of liquid hydrogen and oxygen from the damaged External Tank is still an 'explosion' of a (perhaps surprisingly non-combustive, given expectations) form. It didn't just 'fall to pieces', but created overpressure and massive G-forces that added to the aerodynamic and rotational stresses.
		+	:Also, just because there's survivors (initially) doesn't mean that there can't have been an explosion. People do survive actual ignition-expliosions, or at least do not necessarily die just from one, depending upon how far away from it they are and what/who sits between them and the seat of the explosion. In the Shuttle's case, they're already braced for nominal take-off Gs. An instantaneous 20G or so forward-ish thrust from the various knock-on effects is well within 'survivability', possibly even without any loss of consciousness if you're already braced against lower Gs, in many cases. Though, having watched it (not 'live live', but otherwise at the time), I do feel very uncomfortable thinking about what happened to anyone not knocked out/killed by cabin debris (dislodged/broken by all the various ship-fragmenting forces). Already sitting on top of a 'controlled explosion' of various fuels (solid and liquid), I doubt that they'd appreciate the distinction between an uncontrolled 'thermal explosion' and the slamming of the bulkhead of the LH2 tank into the LOX one within the ET and the domino-effects as they both ruptured even more catastrophically than the initial event caused.
