Now, in my own "golden years" it never occurred to me to make use of talking books. My vision is good and I have no physical disabilities except for a hearing deficit. Hearing aids are a great blessing to me, but I am no longer able to benefit from the enjoyment of music. At the local library I mentioned this to a librarian. "Oh," she said, "you would be eligible for talking books."A recommendation was soon obtained from my audiologist and the application was sent to the cooperating Ohio library It was not long before the package containing the player reached my house.

The tidy, compact machine was a revelation. Some 25 or 30 years ago the one that my mother had was larger. It was designed for use with reel to reel tapes. The operation was not faultless, and I often had to rush to the rescue when my mother struggled with the tapes.Now I had only to insert a tape cartridge in the small, portable machine, easily regulate the volume and speed and quickly change the tape when the playing was completed.
