There have been many comics that makes a joke out of substituting one word with another word, and is has become a recurring subject in xkcd and these comics are listed under the Category:Substitutions.

But after the first four comics using substitutions as part (often the main part) of the joke Randall posted a comic simply called 1288: Substitutions. It listed a set of substitutions that will make reading the news more fun. After that he has added two more comics with the same title and agenda, and thus this Substitution series where created to keep this series apart from the other more general substitution comics.
