Some of these foods are very general, i.e. cheese can be hard, soft, sharp, sweet, etc. While I happily put American-style cheese (singles) on pancakes, I find goat cheese goes extremely well with strawberries.
 
It also depends on how the foods are combined. Alternating sips of hot chocolate & bites of cupcake = great. Pulling the cupcake apart and dropping it into the hot choc = insane due to the cupcake going soggy.
