It's fine that you're helping with updating [[1190: Time]]. I'm trying to write a script that automatically updates the hashes and uploads the images. In order to test the script, could you, at least for the next image, refrain from doing that? I can then test the script and if it works, you can continue if you want to, but least I know that my script does work.

I could see [http://www.explainxkcd.com/wiki/index.php?title=1969:_Not_Available&action=history here] that the bot seemed to have failed this time (or did RamenChef fail to wait long enough?) --[[User:Kynde|Kynde]] ([[User talk:Kynde|talk]]) 20:41, 20 March 2018 (UTC)
: Ok, seems to work. If you want, you can continue updating, but my script should do this automatically within ~1 minute while I'm online. And if I'm not, it should catch up later. --[[User:SlashMe|SlashMe]] ([[User talk:SlashMe|talk]]) 16:09, 2 May 2013 (UTC)

:: GREAT, it's really working. My computer is online 24/7 (but not me). Since updates should be done in time maybe my computer is the better machine for your script. Thank you for your comment. The reason I said "another" river is because "another" is referencing Megan's quote that "yes. there are other rivers" - implying they have arrived at "another" river, not the one they already knew about. I put quotes because as you point out, we haven't exactly seen them come across the first river. As to the water bottle, if you want to change it to "drinking bottle", I'm fine with that. The contents being water is an assumption based on what you might expect someone to do going on a long journey. [[User:TheHYPO|TheHYPO]] ([[User talk:TheHYPO|talk]]) 20:18, 2 May 2013 (UTC)

== A slight technical problem ==

I think a special page (i.e. "1190: Time: Pictures") with a table (description | thumb with link) or other form of separator might work. I seem to remember seeing something on using a different thumb file on a picture link. This is my first time editing wiki pages, but the thumbs and smaller images on the upload pages don't appear to be working. As a work around, I just used blind links without thumbs (e.g. :file:fname...). I can create and upload smaller pictures, but will need some help putting it all together. If this sounds good to you, give me a nod on my talk page and I'll start adding content and let the regulars help straighten it out. Also, am I doing something wrong on the uploads or is it just not working? [[User:Galois|Galois]] ([[User talk:Galois|talk]]) 23:52, 5 June 2013 (UTC)

The image size for comics is a bit off, the zoom is weird and there's some space to the right of the screen... ::It seems that there's only one problem left, rather than the three I mentioned before, but it's still a problem. For example, normally pages should be like this, where there's a sidebar to the left, and the rest is the page you're viewing. But now for comic explanations, there's an empty sidebar on the right side of the screen that shouldn't be there, and the page itself has been squeezed so now it only takes up about 60% of the screen's width. == Unicode issues with the Bot ==

Hello there, and thank you for your work! :-)
+
Hi, your bot doesn't handle UTF-8 in the alt-text well, as seen on today's comic [[2038]] :P This is a known problem with the xkcd api, which double-utf-8-encodes everything. I believe I've read your bot is programmed in Perl, so I may be able to help fix this. There is a module on CPAN to fix this automagically, [https://metacpan.org/pod/Encode::DoubleEncodedUTF8 Encode::DoubleEncodedUTF8] [[User:Gir|//gir.st/]] ([[User talk:Gir|talk]]) 13:23, 27 August 2018 (UTC)

::I was replying at the same time:
 +
:Thanks, you can find the GitHub link here: [[User:DgbrtBOT]]. The latest changes are a little bit ugly because I've had to find a fast solution on the forced https connection. Nonetheless the unicode issue is well known, until now I simply was too lazy. And reading the warnings at the DoubleEncodedUTF8 module tells me it should be solved in a better way.
 +
:I'm not sure, but my CentOS environment looks good:
 +
:<code>env | grep LANG</code> gives me
 +
:<code>LANG=en_US.UTF-8</code>
 +
:The Perl script already has <code>binmode STDOUT, ':utf8';</code> which was needed so maybe the same for <code>STDIN</code> could help. Any ideas? I have a Wiki at my PC for testing. --[[User:Dgbrt|Dgbrt]] ([[User talk:Dgbrt|talk]]) 14:26, 27 August 2018 (UTC)
 +
The problem is solved and the script successfully tested. Thanks for the help. And if Randall reads this: You probably can fool the BOT by using double encoded UTF at the comic name. But I believe the corresponding image URI wouldn't work. --[[User:Dgbrt|Dgbrt]] ([[User talk:Dgbrt|talk]]) 14:26, 28 August 2018 (UTC)

One technical thing that you should note, when you create pages that should <u>redirect</u> directly to a newly created explanation page (for example [[332]] to redirect to [[332: Gyroscopes]]), use the redirection syntax which goes like this: <code><nowiki>#REDIRECT [[332: Gyroscopes]]</nowiki></code>

Another thing, not from me, and about content this time: [[User:Davidy22|Davidy22]] left you a couple of message in the changes he made to the pages you created, but it's fairly possible that you didn't get them, so here they are:
+
Regarding your new [[:Category:Elections|Category:Elections]]...
* (in response to your comment ''"I am still trying to give every comic a page here. Help me to complete it!"''): {{diff|39262|''"I'd really rather leave those links red for someone to write a proper explanation. With explanations that read like second transcripts, all we really do is take traffic away from xkcd.com without adding value."''}}
+
<br>Is it comics like this you wish to include? [[1130: Poll Watching]]? Guess anything Nate Silver is about it?
* {{diff|39263|''"Also, incomplete articles are harder to track than nonexistent articles, so I'd rather we just focus on making explanations well instead of making an unsatisfactory shell for every comic. Incomplete explanations make us look kinda bad too."''}}
+
<br>Just added [[500: Election]]... question is if election category is to be a subset of politics and that some politic comics that are "only" about election should then not also be directly in politic category? Sometimes there is more to it than election, but not really in the election comic for instance --[[User:Kynde|Kynde]] ([[User talk:Kynde|talk]]) 12:30, 2 November 2018 (UTC)
* {{diff|39265|''"People on other sites often comment on how our explanations are a wildly mixed bag of quality. I'd rather you put your effort into making a few good substantial explanations instead of loads of summaries and rehashes of the transcript."''}}
+
:Thanks for your work. I've written "...in politics or elsewhere" because I think it may belong not only to politics. "1130: Poll Watching" definitely belongs to this category, it's even politics. --[[User:Dgbrt|Dgbrt]] ([[User talk:Dgbrt|talk]]) 12:56, 2 November 2018 (UTC)

::Redirections - I'm sorry for the missing #REDIRECT tag. I'm using often a text editor for my own copy and paste templates. I am sure I would have figured out that error today by myself. Thanks for your help!

::Incomplete explanations - I will stop on this even when I think it's good idea to have a page for each comic here and work afterwards on all those incomplete ones. The pages [[Help:How_to_add_a_new_comic_explanation]] and [[List_of_unexplained_comics]] should clarify this issue. Furthermore there are many more incomplete comics not marked as incomplete so you can't find them here: [[:Category:Incomplete explanations|Incomplete explanations]]. I will also send a message to [[User:Davidy22|Davidy22]] about this.--[[User:Dgbrt|Dgbrt]] ([[User talk:Dgbrt|talk]]) 17:35, 3 June 2013 (UTC)

Speaking of incomplete explanations, do you think you could help add some text to [[266: Choices: Part 3]] and [[267: Choices: Part 4]]? To my knowledge, they are the only articles on the wiki without even a stub for an explanation. In addition, the other three choice articles could use some better explanations. --[[User:Oneforfortytwo|Oneforfortytwo]] ([[User talk:Oneforfortytwo|talk]]) 04:02, 27 June 2013 (UTC)
+
On the main page, there's a line below the Latest Comic block that states "Is this out of date? Clicking here will fix that."

== Ach nee,... ==
+
This link contains an action parameter value of "purge" in the URL.  Do you know what this actually does?  Is it somehow related to the caching system, or does it just force the main page to recheck the latest comic number?

...schau mal einer an, noch ein Deutscher! Wollte nur mal 'nen Gruß hinterlassen... ;-) --[[User:SlashMe|SlashMe]] ([[User talk:SlashMe|talk]]) 21:37, 8 June 2013 (UTC)

Just curious, as I thought it might be useful for refreshing the cache when investigating an issue like an updated image that isn't being shown immediately. Thanks for any insight! :Ich grüße zurück! I am greeting you too.--[[User:Dgbrt|Dgbrt]] ([[User talk:Dgbrt|talk]]) 14:20, 9 June 2013 (UTC)
+
:Purging affects only the cache at this Wiki but not at Cloudflare. A purged page here will produce a new hash and thus also the Cloudflare cache will be expired. You can do this at every page here by adding "?action=purge" to the end of the URL; or if there is already a parameter with a question mark it should be "&action=purge". Nonetheless, editing a page and changing only one single character will have the same effect.
 +
:For pictures this is different because there is a page for the image:
 +
:*<nowiki>https://www.explainxkcd.com/wiki/index.php/File:reminders.png</nowiki>
 +
:and the image itself:
 +
:*<nowiki>https://www.explainxkcd.com/wiki/images/2/2c/reminders.png</nowiki>
 +
:You can purge the first link because it's rendered through the PHP engine but the second link is just a static image and the Cloudflare cache assumes that this doesn't change often. This helps to keep the traffic at the Wiki server much lower. --[[User:Dgbrt|Dgbrt]] ([[User talk:Dgbrt|talk]]) 18:04, 2 January 2019 (UTC)

==2003: Presidential_Succession==

You worked on the last unexplained comic of ''xkcd'' at very much the same time that the article was created! [[User:Greyson|Greyson]] ([[User talk:Greyson|talk]]) 23:41, 18 June 2013 (UTC)
+
In the explanation for [[2003: Presidential_Succession]], I just noticed that a number of users have updated the "List of specific individuals" section based on events since the comic was published, even though the section heading states that the list is as of the date the comic was published. Specifically, someone removed Serena Williams from the list because of a loss in July 2018, someone removed a whole section on the Royal family (which might be appropriate, but I don't know for sure), and several users changed a number of government people as a result of election results in November.
:I was working at the same time to create that explanation. After trying to save I got a warning that it's already there. So I just did add my work there.--[[User:Dgbrt|Dgbrt]] ([[User talk:Dgbrt|talk]]) 10:40, 19 June 2013 (UTC)

::In that case, you also created the last explanation. You two worked on the comic at essentially the same time. [[User:Greyson|Greyson]] ([[User talk:Greyson|talk]]) 18:13, 28 June 2013 (UTC)

== 1190:Time frame renumbering ==
+
I was going to try to revert each of the changes back to the original list ,but there are also changes that are probably appropriate in other areas of the explanation. Do you know of a way to revert only those changes that were not appropriate, while retaining others that are appropriate? [[User:Ianrbibtitlht|Ianrbibtitlht]] ([[User talk:Ianrbibtitlht|talk]]) 15:46, 5 January 2019 (UTC)

Apologies if I created confusion, I was under the impression that davidy22 had already made the final decision to renumber the frames. I didn't know there was someone else who made the decision. [[User:Patzer|Patzer]] ([[User talk:Patzer|talk]]) 01:11, 2 July 2013 (UTC)
+
:I decided to just manually revert each change made that was not appropriate, so you can disregard my question. I also added '''bold''' highlighting to the text in the opening paragraph that the list is as of the date of the comic to let people know that they should not update the names based on later events. One of the edits was to remove members of the royal family from the list. I left those names off of the updated list, as that makes sense to me. ::Many thanks for your work. The explanation always belongs to the date when the comic was published. This past week, when I viewed this comic, the image was not displaying, and it wouldn't display even when I clicked on the image file link on the image page (the thumbnail was OK though).  I was getting what I thought was a server error instead, and the problem was clearly not due to something in the explanation page. I thought maybe something was wrong with the image file, but I was able to download it and open it in my local image viewer program. I was considering what I might be able to do to resolve the issue, but not knowing why it wasn't opening, I put it off...

== The right place to add 'discussion' ==
+
However, now it's working fine again on the comic page, and I'm not sure what to make of the previous problem.

I don't disagree with your comment to [[User:Anon]] (although I'd say "additions" instead of "adds"), or to a number of your edits to their additions, but some of what has been added is not worthy of Trivia sections being added. They should probably have been put into the talk page, or in some cases, left where they were. [[User:Markhurd|Mark Hurd]] ([[User talk:Markhurd|talk]]) 05:39, 15 August 2013 (UTC)
+
Have you seen similar issues like this in the past? Any thoughts on what might have caused it? I considered whether it might be helpful to actually split the image into separate slices and add them to the comic with some slider effect to view just a slice at a time, but I thought that might be too much effort for a wiki environment. Any thoughts? [[User:Ianrbibtitlht|Ianrbibtitlht]] ([[User talk:Ianrbibtitlht|talk]]) 05:28, 11 January 2019 (UTC)
:You are right, I just did not want to delete the additions by this new user. Because I can't move a single line to the talk page by one edit I thought the Trivia section would be the best solution. I don't like links to other comics here when it doesn't explain anything to the actual one. But a sidestep to a similar joke could be worthy to the Trivia section.--[[User:Dgbrt|Dgbrt]] ([[User talk:Dgbrt|talk]]) 13:36, 15 August 2013 (UTC)
+
:Please copy and paste the server error message or do a screen shot. But maybe it was just a local problem with your browser. Other comic images still did work? And click on the navigation title to see the original at the xkcd site. It also has the huge image directly embedded, thus I think we also should do so. --[[User:Dgbrt|Dgbrt]] ([[User talk:Dgbrt|talk]]) 17:15, 11 January 2019 (UTC)

Hello Dgbrt, I'm sorry I explained too much about comic 1255. I was under the impression that the purpose of this wiki was to explain XKCD comics for those who don't get the references, so I thought it would be helpful to explain the part about sailing in a line tangent to the surface, which wasn't previously touched on in the description. I understand now that what you guys actually do here is to describe and transcribe XKCD comics. That's not something I'm interested in so I'll leave now. Thank you for correcting my misunderstanding. Hi, good thing to short-term protect the new pages. However at the same time someone with the account truth revealer has registered... also still on other posts back and forth editing (with antisemitic content from IP-users) happens: https://www.explainxkcd.com/wiki/index.php?title=2120:_Brain_Hemispheres&curid=21799&diff=170762&oldid=170760 is it possible to also block for stuff like that? like slowing down the capabilities to do multiple edits for IP-users? --[[User:Lupo|Lupo]] ([[User talk:Lupo|talk]]) 16:22, 8 March 2019 (UTC)
:Hey, this site does not only "transcribe XKCD comics". The wrong stories about Columbus is the major joke here, Megan did use Tolkien's books, but she also could have used many others. The explain should point on the essentials of the comic, people should be able to read this easy in general.--[[User:Dgbrt|Dgbrt]] ([[User talk:Dgbrt|talk]]) 15:07, 25 August 2013 (UTC)

:This is a bad solution because many - sometimes even most - editors are just IPs. This action today is just a signal to that vandal. ::Hello. Admin here. I don't comb through and look at every single edit that happens in this wiki, but some things flag up as significant and this scuffle qualifies. Reading the current explanation and your addition, there are a number of unexplained and unreferenced Tolkien-specific terms littered around the place. Valar and Ilúvatar will not be familiar to people who have not read the Silmarillion before. Megan appears to be drawing a direct parallel between Eärendil and Columbus here with the quote "A silmaril on his brow, he wanders the heavens as the morning star." There is no apparent evidence to show that the reformation of the earth is referenced in this comic; no mention of Akallabêth, Ilúvatar or any hint of Columbus being of elvish descent. If you can link your reference directly to the comic, feel free to add it in.

Hello! I have noticed that "In this comic" is a pet peeve to you. As a gift, I have removed it from almost all of the 60 explanations that it started, but there remain some more places where it could be removed. If you wish, you can go ahead and remove the newlines that I left in their wake.

== Possible problem with the PHP installation ==

If you need a general copy-editor for grammar, punctuation, or usage, let me know. I consider myself adequate at it, being a decently educated native American English speaker. (I am not a professional editor, though, so stuff can always be made better.)
+
Dgbrt, I had an exchange of posts on the SlashMe talk page because that is the only administrator with any Wiki contributions shown in 2020 (for example you were in March 2019 and Jeff in April 2019). SlashMe confirmed the problem I identified but had no solution, and suggested that I reach out to you. The exchange is copied below. --[[User:JohnB|JohnB]] ([[User talk:JohnB|talk]]) 00:38, 11 July 2020 (UTC)

Also, as you definitely have noticed, I can get belligerent over some things, particularly whether a page deserves its "Incomplete" status. I expect some more sparring matches in the coming future. I do hope to work with you on cutting the number of such pages down.

=== Really really difficult to get to the What If? page in the Wiki ===
 +
The name of the page is '''what if?''' but if you make an internal link the usual way, as here: [[what if?|<nowiki>[[what if?]]</nowiki>]], you get a mostly blank page with the message ''No input file specified''. It would appear that page names with a question mark break something. The failed form is what is used on the disambiguation page [[What If (disambiguation)|<nowiki>[[What If]]</nowiki>]], and so following the page link from there fails. What does work is this internal link: [[whatif|<nowiki>[[whatif]]</nowiki>]], but when you get there and click what links here, that fails as described above.  If you really really want to get to the what links here page for the what if? page, you have to use an external link, as [https://www.explainxkcd.com/wiki/index.php/Special:WhatLinksHere?target=what_if%3F&namespace%3D|<nowiki>[https://www.explainxkcd.com/wiki/index.php/Special:WhatLinksHere?target=what_if%3F&namespace%3D]</nowiki>].  But but but.  On all those pages that it says link to the what if? page, the links are broken as described above.

Anyway, thanks for the intro to the wiki! --[[User:Quicksilver|Quicksilver]] ([[User talk:Quicksilver|talk]]) 21:31, 25 August 2013 (UTC)
+
My opinion is that the way to fix at this problem is to rename the what if? page to have no question mark, and then to visit all the pages in the old linked to list and update their links to the new page name. Ugh.
:Welcome Quicksilver! Now that I have your attention, we can begin discussing things. We have a brewing edit war over the following pages (so far): [[694: Retro Virus]], [[54: Science]], and [[10: Pi Equals]].
+
:I have looked a little bit into it and it seems to be a configuration issue with the PHP installation. However, I don't have a definite solution for that and even if I had, I don't have access to the server and wouldn't be able to change it. I think [[User:Dgbrt|Dgbrt]] has. Try reaching out to him. --[[User:SlashMe|SlashMe]] ([[User talk:SlashMe|talk]]) 22:58, 10 July 2020 (UTC)

The first one I claim to be complete, while you dispute this. I cannot see how much further we can go into explanations of XP, viruses, Howard Dean, Friendster, or Kazaa. Apart from those, the comic really doesn't have anything else to explain, and its grammar and style are fair. I see no reason that the Incomplete tag should be there.
+
::One more data point.  The redirect page [[whatif|<nowiki>[[whatif]]</nowiki>]] redirects using the [[what if?|<nowiki>[[what if?]]</nowiki>]] syntax that fails every place else, but when redirecting it actually works. Go figure. --[[User:JohnB|JohnB]] ([[User talk:JohnB|talk]]) 00:47, 12 July 2020 (UTC)

In the second one, we have different interpretations of the title text, "Bonus point if you can identify the science in question." You claim that this somehow means we should challenge science. While I understand that part of the spirit of science is questioning it, this sentence has a fairly straightforward meaning: if you can identify the science in question, you get a bonus point. In other words, if you know where this equation comes from, good for you. Randall is praising his readers who happen to know about the blackbody radiation curve, which would be a good number of them (I'd guess).
+
:::Hi JohnB, you're right – looks like ''redirects'' to the pages do work.  FYI, a few other users have noticed that there are some more pages that have a similar problem (mainly comics with titles that end in question marks); I've tried to collect the gist of all your findings and add them to the [[explain xkcd:Community portal/Technical#Unable to view "what_if?" page|discussion there]], but feel free to jump in if there's anything else you can think of. – [[User:Yfmcpxpj|Yfmcpxpj]] ([[User talk:Yfmcpxpj|talk]]) 05:21, 29 September 2020 (UTC)

The third one is a simple issue of punctuation. You have argued, via explanations, that "one must close sentences." While I understand that it may look awkward for the quotation marks in question (those around the name of Mrs Roberts's daughter) to contain a period, not part of the name, and to have the sentence ended by a punctuation mark inside a pair of quotes, this is the English convention on quotation marks. Such a convention can be checked [http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/owlprint/577/ here]. This usage clashes with that of French, German, and many other languages, but is standard in English.

== [[1270: Functional]] ==

Would you mind answering my actual concerns regarding [[1270]]? The things you answered are (in my eyes) very minor points, where I would not mind to compromise. However, currently the article does not explain what '''{{w|functional programming}}''' is at all! I wanted to change that which you mostly edited away. I am willing to make my explanations more understandable (preferably if you or anyone else has suggestions what is/might be unclear). --[[User:Chtz|Chtz]] ([[User talk:Chtz|talk]]) 16:11, 30 September 2013 (UTC)

:Hi, I don't like edit wars. I just did try to simplify the explain for non programmer readers. And I think these facts should be mentioned:

:1. Functions return a value, unlike procedures do.

:2. Your wiki link says: "a style of building the structure and elements of computer programs, that treats computation as the evaluation of mathematical functions and avoids state and mutable data." My sine(x) idea isn't bad according to this.

:3. The part "mutable data" means that each call of the function allocates its own memory, local variables are not viewable or changeable from the outside. Recursions just use this feature.

:4. Tail recursion just means that there is a clearly defined break at the end of the function. The most elegant code should be this (the else statement is removed, braces for a clear code):

factorial(n)

{

    if n > 0

    {

        n * factorial(n-1)

    }

    return 1

}

:5. The wikipedia pages are a little bit confusing and inaccurate (I would mark them incomplete). But even the first reference at {{w|functional programming}} to this [http://www.dbnet.ece.ntua.gr/~adamo/languages/books/p359-hudak.pdf PDF] is interesting. It's saying (Chapter 4): "Myth 1, that functional programming is the antithesis of conventional imperative programming,...".

:This programming paradigm definitions are still confusing, but here Randall just mentions a recursion with a break at the tail. I think we have to focus on this first. --[[User:Dgbrt|Dgbrt]] ([[User talk:Dgbrt|talk]]) 19:33, 30 September 2013 (UTC)

::I replaced your bullet points by numbers, so I can refer to them, I hope you don't mind.

::ad 1) I agree, but I don't know why you need to introduce the (imperative) concept of a procedure at all? (There is no such thing in functional programming)

::ad 2) Yes, sine is a function, also in the functional programming sense. It is not really a function one would implement using a functional language (although it is possible). Also this function is not referred to later, so I don't see any benefit from introducing it. How about using the factorial function as example for a function?

::ad 3) There is no such thing as a "variable" in functional programming. Variables are mutable data, and mutable data is avoided.

::ad 4) What I learned is that tail recursion means that the only recursive call happens at the tail of the function ("call" in imperative programming, or substitution in functional programming). Maybe I'm wrong and should study again, and also did not understand what {{w|tail recursion}} wants to say, but I doubt that.

::ad 5) I agree that it is not very easy to understand, but I don't see any inaccuracy in that article. About the reference: Yes, but that does not mean imperative and functional programming is essentially the same. The section continues and describes that functional programming carries on the evolution from low-level (e.g. Assembler, allowing just simple operations) over high-level (imperative) programming which allows expressions to functional programming which says there are '''only''' expressions. (If and why and when this is useful is another story -- though actually that is essentially what White Hats wants to know from Cueball)

::And w.r.t your last point: So you would prefer not to explain (or have someone explain) the parts which are confusing to you? Wasn't explaining that the whole idea of this wiki? --[[User:Chtz|Chtz]] ([[User talk:Chtz|talk]]) 20:44, 30 September 2013 (UTC)

:::I don't mind your edit but now I will reply in general. The most important paradigm is {{w|Structured programming|structured programming}} witch did lead to avoid statements like ''GOTO'', but this explain can not be a comprisal on computer since. It's just a small comic mentioning functional programming and tail recursion. But maybe we should try to enhance the English Wikipedia. ;) --[[User:Dgbrt|Dgbrt]] ([[User talk:Dgbrt|talk]]) 21:04, 30 September 2013 (UTC)

::::Yes, the article you quoted also says (concluding the Myth 1-section) that functional programming goes further from avoiding [[goto]] to also avoiding assignments and control-flow structures. I'll mostly leave enhancing the English wikipedia to English native speakers, actually {{w|de:Funktionale Programmierung}} is not that badly written. (Sure it also gets complicated towards the end, but ''intuitive and clear'' does not equal ''easy'' ;) ) [[541|Damn you, Randall!]] --[[User:Chtz|Chtz]] ([[User talk:Chtz|talk]]) 21:37, 30 September 2013 (UTC)

:::::The German Wiki is often just a bad translation from English, lacking references. But this part is interesting: {{w|de:Funktionale_Programmierung#Abgrenzung_von_imperativer_Programmierung}} explains the difference of imperative and functional implementations. My example above is functional, NOT imperative, and also includes the the ''tail'' part. --[[User:Dgbrt|Dgbrt]] ([[User talk:Dgbrt|talk]]) 22:11, 30 September 2013 (UTC)

::::::Ok, you are right, that it is '''also''' functional (at least when written using if ''and'' else and ignoring the syntactic noise of the ''return'' (without the else part, I would consider that control flow: The second return is called ''after'' the if statement)). '''Only''' functional I would call the formula which comes before the implementation (in the de:wiki article), but the implementation is also a valid imperative function.

::::::I still don't agree that this is tail recursive (I think our definitions of tail-recursion don't match so far). --[[User:Chtz|Chtz]] ([[User talk:Chtz|talk]]) 23:37, 30 September 2013 (UTC)

The explain is still not very helpful, and the reason is that {{w|Computer science}} isn't a science like physics or math, it's more like philosophy or something else. An author is defining some theories and statements with no prove as it is done in math. [[User:Chtz|Chtz]], we are both wrong and correct, but Randall is just joking about this ''science''.

The details about different implementations can be shown below this general classification on computer science. I think this would be the best solution for an explain, different meanings can be shown, just like computer science does. What do you think?--[[User:Dgbrt|Dgbrt]] ([[User talk:Dgbrt|talk]]) 21:07, 1 October 2013 (UTC)

I can only presume you haven't read Lovecraft, but those are the best known sealed-away gods in modern literature. I doubt there's a precise reference being made to ''anything'' in the comic, but Cthulhu and other Lovecraftian Gods are the overwhelmingly likely inspiration. The undo button gives you the version of the page prior to the edit that you hit undo on. When you disagree with one part of an edit, hitting the undo button reverts everything else as well. Don't default to the undo button unless you're absolutely sure that the entire edit is bad. I don't need a thanks, but the latest GIFs were done by my BOT — that main table would not work without my work. ::There's been a fair few cases in the past and with this particular case where you've defaulted to autoreverting an edit when the edit button would have sufficed. Disagreements need not be made personal; it is possible for a disagreement to occur without assuming insult. I track recent changes for vandalism/peacekeeping/comment signing duties and while I don't tend to interfere that often with daily happenings, I have noticed that a healthy portion of arguments have included you. Swearing isn't a strictly appropriate response to a user removing an incomplete tag or rewriting an explanation, even if you strongly disagree with it. try to avoid defaulting to arguing. == When ==

Hi Dgbrt. This is just a question for my personal curiosity. After seeing [http://www.explainxkcd.com/wiki/index.php?title=Randall_Munroe&diff=58669&oldid=51439 this edit], I started wondering whether the use of "when" in that sentence was due to you being a native German speaker. I'm asking because I follow a blog by a Dutch guy who also uses "when" all the time, in sentences where it would make more sense to use "if" instead. Does the equivalent to "when" have extra meanings in Dutch and/or German, outside of the English time-based meaning?<br/>

Cheers, [[User:Waldir|Waldir]] ([[User talk:Waldir|talk]]) 23:08, 24 February 2014 (UTC)

:Hi Waldir, "if" is more a question about an issue while "when" is more about time. I'm not native English but I'm still trying to learn — Google gives me "if" as "indien" in dutch, and "when" as "wanneer". Since I do know {{w|Plattdeutsch}} I do know many funny misunderstandings belonging even on this simple word. A hurt in English is a pain, in Dutch it is a "pijn", but in German the word "peinlich" doesn't match this meanings at all. I'm doing mistakes on understanding languages, but I still have many fun on exploring. Don't know if (<-NOT WHEN) I did answer your question. --[[User:Dgbrt|Dgbrt]] ([[User talk:Dgbrt|talk]]) 23:46, 24 February 2014 (UTC)

: Although "when" is "wenn" in German and "if" is "falls", it is very common to use "wenn" for both meanings. Therefore, many Germans (including me) tend to use "when" even <del>when</del><ins>if</ins> they mean "if". Although I don't speak Dutch, I know that it is very similar to German, so it might be the same issue. --[[Special:Contributions/108.162.254.196|108.162.254.196]] 14:57, 25 February 2014 (UTC)

::Using "when" is often a {{w|false friend}} used by Germans, like I did before. In German "wenn" means "when", "if", and more in English; so you have to care about those different words in English. I'm still happy to learn more about the English language, in general it's believed to be more simple than German. But in my opinion this just means that English is much more precise and shorter. --[[User:Dgbrt|Dgbrt]] ([[User talk:Dgbrt|talk]]) 21:17, 25 February 2014 (UTC)

::: Thanks guys for the explanations, they were both enlightening and amusing! I just want to clarify that sometimes it ''is'' acceptable to use "when" in English to refer to a general condition rather than a strictly time-based one (as it seems to be the case in German), but the distinction may be subtler/stricter than in German. [http://english.stackexchange.com/a/35164/10804 This answer] explains it well, I think: "If you say 'when' something happens, you imply it definitely will happen, even if the precise timing is unknown. You use 'if' when (!) there's uncertainty about whether the event will happen at all." --[[User:Waldir|Waldir]] ([[User talk:Waldir|talk]]) 17:24, 26 February 2014 (UTC)

Create comic page in lieu of DgbrtBOT[edit]

I could see here that the bot seemed to have failed this time (or did RamenChef fail to wait long enough?) --Kynde (talk) 20:41, 20 March 2018 (UTC)

Ah sorry, saw your comment in the Discussion now. Great if it has been fixed. --Kynde (talk) 20:47, 20 March 2018 (UTC)

ReCAPTCHA[edit]

ReCAPTCHA v1 has expired, and since no one replied on the admin forum, I asked Kynde, and he told me to come to you. So can you upgrade it to v2? Thanks. Herobrine (talk) 13:05, 9 April 2018 (UTC)

Hi Herobrine, this is bad. Also email notification doesn't work since a long time. All admins are nonexistent since months and I don't have access the the server. I will check what I can do with the BOT account. But there is not much hope. --Dgbrt (talk) 15:00, 9 April 2018 (UTC)
Oh... ok. But if I remember correctly, I think one of the admins (I think Jeff?) has a twitter account, but I don't have one and I can't ask on twitter. Could you like contact him that way? And maybe tell him to add a few admins to deal with problems like this? Thanks! Herobrine (talk) 10:18, 11 April 2018 (UTC)
Hi Herobrine, I don't have a twitter account too, but I will sign in when things go worse. And this will happen in the future when all admins are still absent because:
  • The next invoice for the web-service at Cloudflare must be paid.
  • The name registration at namecheap.com will expire on 2018-08-10.
And it seems that there is no advertising here on the left. So we definitely need new admins here to address these and other issues. I would apply for this, but not alone. --Dgbrt (talk) 13:07, 11 April 2018 (UTC)

Hello Dgbrt, I saw your message both here and on Wikipedia. Messaging me on my talk page is enough, I'll see it in my feed reader. Unfortunately, I can't do anything about recaptcha as I don't have ssh access to the server. --SlashMe (talk) 15:25, 11 April 2018 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply SlashMe. You don't have ssh access but as an Administrator you are maybe able to send an email to the relevant persons. --Dgbrt (talk) 16:09, 11 April 2018 (UTC)
Unfortunately, I don't have Jeff's email address either. --SlashMe (talk) 06:47, 12 April 2018 (UTC)

The problem is solved. --Dgbrt (talk) 14:50, 22 May 2018 (UTC)

I'm here[edit]

I'm sorry Dgbt (and all my other friendly editors/helpers!) Let me know what needs to be done and I'll work through it. I'm going to try to be much more proactive and logged in. It's been a busy few months. Please accept my apologies. The main complication with reCaptcha is that to upgrade to use ReCaptchaNoCaptcha, I'd have to upgrade the wiki. I'm not opposed, it is just a larger work effort than I thought! We are also quite a bit behind! --Jeff (talk) 03:18, 13 April 2018 (UTC)

A slight technical problem[edit]

The image size for comics is a bit off, the zoom is weird and there's some space to the right of the screen... Not sure what to do about it, but as an admin now (congratulations, by the way!) you should be able to deal with it. Herobrine (talk) 13:06, 4 July 2018 (UTC)

Hi Herobrine, what is weird? Please give an example of what's wrong and how it should be. BTW: To be an admin just means more work ;) --Dgbrt (talk) 13:20, 4 July 2018 (UTC)
It seems that there's only one problem left, rather than the three I mentioned before, but it's still a problem. Herobrine (talk) 01:24, 5 July 2018 (UTC)
Sorry for the delay, but it should be fixed now. --Dgbrt (talk) 16:38, 10 July 2018 (UTC)

Unicode issues with the Bot[edit]

Hi, your bot doesn't handle UTF-8 in the alt-text well, as seen on today's comic 2038 :P This is a known problem with the xkcd api, which double-utf-8-encodes everything. I believe I've read your bot is programmed in Perl, so I may be able to help fix this. There is a module on CPAN to fix this automagically, Encode::DoubleEncodedUTF8 //gir.st/ (talk) 13:23, 27 August 2018 (UTC)

E: I've sent you a PR; https://github.com/dgbrt/explainXKCD_update/pull/3 //gir.st/ (talk) 13:44, 27 August 2018 (UTC)
I was replying at the same time:
Thanks, you can find the GitHub link here: User:DgbrtBOT. The latest changes are a little bit ugly because I've had to find a fast solution on the forced https connection. Nonetheless the unicode issue is well known, until now I simply was too lazy. And reading the warnings at the DoubleEncodedUTF8 module tells me it should be solved in a better way.
I'm not sure, but my CentOS environment looks good:
env | grep LANG gives me
LANG=en_US.UTF-8
The Perl script already has binmode STDOUT, ':utf8'; which was needed so maybe the same for STDIN could help. Any ideas? I have a Wiki at my PC for testing. --Dgbrt (talk) 14:26, 27 August 2018 (UTC)

The problem is solved and the script successfully tested. Thanks for the help. And if Randall reads this: You probably can fool the BOT by using double encoded UTF at the comic name. But I believe the corresponding image URI wouldn't work. --Dgbrt (talk) 14:26, 28 August 2018 (UTC)

Elections[edit]

Regarding your new Category:Elections...
Is it comics like this you wish to include? 1130: Poll Watching? Guess anything Nate Silver is about it?
Just added 500: Election... question is if election category is to be a subset of politics and that some politic comics that are "only" about election should then not also be directly in politic category? Sometimes there is more to it than election, but not really in the election comic for instance --Kynde (talk) 12:30, 2 November 2018 (UTC)

Thanks for your work. I've written "...in politics or elsewhere" because I think it may belong not only to politics. "1130: Poll Watching" definitely belongs to this category, it's even politics. --Dgbrt (talk) 12:56, 2 November 2018 (UTC)

Purge?[edit]

On the main page, there's a line below the Latest Comic block that states "Is this out of date? Clicking here will fix that."

This link contains an action parameter value of "purge" in the URL. Do you know what this actually does? Is it somehow related to the caching system, or does it just force the main page to recheck the latest comic number?

Just curious, as I thought it might be useful for refreshing the cache when investigating an issue like an updated image that isn't being shown immediately. Thanks for any insight! (Oops, forgot to sign my edit!) Ianrbibtitlht (talk) 17:58, 2 January 2019 (UTC)

Purging affects only the cache at this Wiki but not at Cloudflare.
For pictures this is different because there is a page for the image:
  • https://www.explainxkcd.com/wiki/index.php/File:reminders.png
and the image itself:
  • https://www.explainxkcd.com/wiki/images/2/2c/reminders.png
You can purge the first link because it's rendered through the PHP engine but the second link is just a static image and the Cloudflare cache assumes that this doesn't change often. This helps to keep the traffic at the Wiki server much lower. --Dgbrt (talk) 18:04, 2 January 2019 (UTC)
Awesome and thorough answer! I appreciate you taking the time to explain it so well. Ianrbibtitlht (talk) 18:20, 2 January 2019 (UTC)

2003: Presidential_Succession[edit]

In the explanation for 2003: Presidential_Succession, I just noticed that a number of users have updated the "List of specific individuals" section based on events since the comic was published, even though the section heading states that the list is as of the date the comic was published. Specifically, someone removed Serena Williams from the list because of a loss in July 2018, someone removed a whole section on the Royal family (which might be appropriate, but I don't know for sure), and several users changed a number of government people as a result of election results in November.

I was going to try to revert each of the changes back to the original list ,but there are also changes that are probably appropriate in other areas of the explanation. Do you know of a way to revert only those changes that were not appropriate, while retaining others that are appropriate? Ianrbibtitlht (talk) 15:46, 5 January 2019 (UTC)

I decided to just manually revert each change made that was not appropriate, so you can disregard my question. I also added bold highlighting to the text in the opening paragraph that the list is as of the date of the comic to let people know that they should not update the names based on later events. One of the edits was to remove members of the royal family from the list. I left those names off of the updated list, as that makes sense to me. Ianrbibtitlht (talk) 17:37, 5 January 2019 (UTC)
Many thanks for your work. The explanation always belongs to the date when the comic was published. Any further developments may be mentioned by that manner, but in general that's trivia because it doesn't explain the comic itself in it's context. --Dgbrt (talk) 21:16, 5 January 2019 (UTC)

1732: Earth_Temperature_Timeline[edit]

Ok, hate to bug you again, but I have an odd question about 1732:_Earth_Temperature_Timeline and its comic image, which is 740 × 14,889 in size.

However, now it's working fine again on the comic page, and I'm not sure what to make of the previous problem.

Ianrbibtitlht (talk) 05:28, 11 January 2019 (UTC)

Please copy and paste the server error message or do a screen shot. But maybe it was just a local problem with your browser. Other comic images still did work? And click on the navigation title to see the original at the xkcd site. It also has the huge image directly embedded, thus I think we also should do so. --Dgbrt (talk) 17:15, 11 January 2019 (UTC)

Protection from antisemitic troll[edit]

Hi, good thing to short-term protect the new pages. However at the same time someone with the account truth revealer has registered... also still on other posts back and forth editing (with antisemitic content from IP-users) happens: https://www.explainxkcd.com/wiki/index.php?title=2120:_Brain_Hemispheres&curid=21799&diff=170762&oldid=170760 is it possible to also block for stuff like that? like slowing down the capabilities to do multiple edits for IP-users? --Lupo (talk) 16:22, 8 March 2019 (UTC)

This is a bad solution because many - sometimes even most - editors are just IPs. This action today is just a signal to that vandal. Further older discussions are here: Admin requests at the Community portal. --Dgbrt (talk) 16:32, 8 March 2019 (UTC)

DgbrtBOT failed 2019-08-30[edit]

Hi Dgbrt. The bot failed yesterday on 2196: Nice To E-Meet You. Have you noticed it? --Kynde (talk) 09:29, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

It began working again at 2252: Parenthetical Names. So 56 comics or about 19 weeks of downtime...? Did you fix it? --Kynde (talk) 09:26, 10 January 2020 (UTC)
It was not continuesly down from August onward. It started again right on 2nd September: 2197: Game Show and did work until Friday, 13th December: 2241: Brussels Sprouts Mandela Effect (maybe it is supersitious about Friday the 13th?) - see contributions page of the bot --Lupo (talk) 09:36, 10 January 2020 (UTC)

Possible problem with the PHP installation[edit]

Dgbrt, I had an exchange of posts on the SlashMe talk page because that is the only administrator with any Wiki contributions shown in 2020 (for example you were in March 2019 and Jeff in April 2019). SlashMe confirmed the problem I identified but had no solution, and suggested that I reach out to you. The exchange is copied below. --JohnB (talk) 00:38, 11 July 2020 (UTC)

Really really difficult to get to the What If? page in the Wiki[edit]

The name of the page is what if? but if you make an internal link the usual way, as here: [[what if?]], you get a mostly blank page with the message No input file specified. It would appear that page names with a question mark break something. The failed form is what is used on the disambiguation page [[What If]], and so following the page link from there fails. What does work is this internal link: [[whatif]], but when you get there and click what links here, that fails as described above. If you really really want to get to the what links here page for the what if? page, you have to use an external link, as [https://www.explainxkcd.com/wiki/index.php/Special:WhatLinksHere?target=what_if%3F&namespace%3D]. But but but. On all those pages that it says link to the what if? page, the links are broken as described above.

My opinion is that the way to fix at this problem is to rename the what if? page to have no question mark, and then to visit all the pages in the old linked to list and update their links to the new page name. Ugh. --JohnB (talk) 22:45, 10 July 2020 (UTC)

I have looked a little bit into it and it seems to be a configuration issue with the PHP installation. However, I don't have a definite solution for that and even if I had, I don't have access to the server and wouldn't be able to change it. I think Dgbrt has. Try reaching out to him. --SlashMe (talk) 22:58, 10 July 2020 (UTC)
One more data point. The redirect page [[whatif]] redirects using the [[what if?]] syntax that fails every place else, but when redirecting it actually works. Go figure. --JohnB (talk) 00:47, 12 July 2020 (UTC)
Hi JohnB, you're right – looks like redirects to the pages do work. FYI, a few other users have noticed that there are some more pages that have a similar problem (mainly comics with titles that end in question marks); I've tried to collect the gist of all your findings and add them to the discussion there, but feel free to jump in if there's anything else you can think of. – Yfmcpxpj (talk) 05:21, 29 September 2020 (UTC)

Thanks for maintaining the bot![edit]

I saw in today's incomplete tag that you mentioned no one ever thanks you. I just wanted to thank you for maintaining it. Mikemk (talk) 15:05, 19 August 2020 (UTC)

I see that you are the newest sysop on the wiki and no one uses the community portal for some reason so... Welcome Bot?[edit]

I have an idea to make a welcome bot for new users that have made it to the editing leaderboards. So there are no red links and new members are encouraged to edit.The 𝗦𝗾𝗿𝘁-𝟭 talk stalk 16:59, 14 January 2021 (UTC)

A couple of issues[edit]

Google seems to have changed something in AdSense again, and the ads have been appearing in random positions again since December, 2019. This page might have a solution? It's been quite a while, and the ads are still broken. Also as others have already mentioned links that end in special characters are broken. Herobrine (talk) 02:10, 5 February 2021 (UTC)
