Note:  John in Revelations seems obviously talking about a nuclear exchange, with the ensuing nuclear winter.  The soot clouds from this are predicted by our scientists to "blot out the sun"; when the moon becomes visible again, it will look red, due to the dust in the air.  (See modern-day volcanic explosions).  Whether Revelations turns out to be a prophecy, or a warning--like Scrooge's Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come--remains to be seen.
