Premiering on {{w|Fox Broadcasting Company|Fox}} in 2002, it was cancelled after airing 11 of its 14 episodes due to low ratings, but gained a dedicated fanbase. Despite its short run, the series received an Emmy for Special Visual Effects and was ranked by TV Guide as one of the top "Cancelled Too Soon" shows. The show's success led to a 2005 film called ''{{w|Serenity (2005 film)|Serenity}}'', and it also expanded into comics and a role-playing game.
