These are xkcd comics featuring a complex, jargon-inducing, or otherwise very not easy to understand problem being broken down into simplified language. This technique, as noted in the first comic to use it, is prominently seen at the Simple English Wikipedia, and is commonly referred to as "layman's terms," although most of these comics take it a bit further than one normally would (hence the humor).
