(with all due respect, this doesn't belong on a template page. port it over to the editing faq or something. also-do we even need to teach people how to create templates? we don't really want unneeded templates being created willy-nilly.)
(Tutorial has been ported to the FAQ per your suggestion.)

Line 1: Line 1:
<noinclude><nowiki>Hello, and welcome to the wiki! Creating a template is simple.</nowiki>

Step one: Type <code><nowiki>{{YourTemplateName}}</nowiki></code> (but substituting your own name) on whatever page you want your template on.

Step Two: You should see a red line that looks something like <span style="color: #BA0000"><nowiki>Template:YourTemplateName</nowiki></span> that is (unlike here) a link. Click it.

Step Three: Add the content of your template by typing it in wikitext. If you want to use a specific image, make sure to upload it first before linking to it in the template.

Step Four: Add content to the page that should not be included in the template. This can be done with the noinclude and /noinclude commands.

Step Five: Now that you've added the content of your template, it's time to use it! Use it in a page by typing <code><nowiki>{{YourTemplateName}}</nowiki></code> on whatever page you want to use it on. Make sure to not use it on comic pages or comic discussion pages.

I hope this helped you get started. Now get out there, make your templates, and don't be afraid to ask people for help. This tutorial is merely meant to be a stepping stone, made for basic understanding. Make sure you understand proper template etiquette before using your template on any page other than your own user page or talk page. </noinclude>
