Explain xkcd: It's 'cause you're dumb.
Jump to: navigation, search

Just one thing. Can you please stop putting the trivia thing on explanations just because a comic references one other comic? If it's a recurring theme, then fine, but for one comic? Just write it at the bottom of each explanation, no need to use trivia. Thanks! Herobrine (talk) 04:09, 3 March 2018 (UTC)

The explanation should be explanatory. Where there's a direct callback to another comic (such as with the bun detector) a reference to that comic might be explanatory, but for the most part they're not.162.158.155.26 09:34, 5 March 2018 (UTC)
Yeah, but for one comic? Seriously?!?!? Referencing other comics happens all the time. We have the categories because the same topics will appear many times. Type "Trivia" and press search. Check the first ten results. How many trivia sections are there because a comic references another comic? You are wrong. You are not White Hat. Just stop. Herobrine (talk) 12:36, 8 March 2018 (UTC)
Firstly, please lay off all capitals and exclamation / question marks. It doesn't make your point any stronger; it just makes you seem rather aggressive and / or a little deranged.
Secondly, I don't appreciate the hectoring and lecturing tone. If you want to have a reasonable discussion I'm happy to do so, but simply telling people what to do is not acceptable. It's entirely against the spirit of a wiki.
Thirdly, I am not 'wrong', since there is no 'wrong' and 'right' here - it's a matter of opinion. I just happen to have a different opinion to you.
Lastly, in my opinion, if the comic shares a category with another comic, there's no need to reference it directly at all, since it can be found through the category. If there is no shared category, and you just want to note a one-off thematic similarity with another comic, that is clearly trivia, and not part of the explanation, and should go in a 'Trivia' section. I really don't see what the problem is with having a 'Trivia' section with one item in it if there is only one item of trivia to note. It certainly seems better than cluttering up the explanation with trivia, and being inconsistent in where the trivia is found. 162.158.155.26 09:23, 12 March 2018 (UTC)
Okay, first, I've only added the capitals because I'm just plain exasperated, not because I'm trying to be aggressive or making my point stronger, I've changed them all into lowercase. I'm also not trying intentionally to lecture you so if you got the wrong impression then I'm sorry. And my first post wasn't trying to tell what to do, just giving you a suggestion, as I thought that would be better. Oh, and calling me deranged? Really?
But anyway, let me explain why we don't need the extra trivia section. Adding the reference in the explanation is not "cluttering the explanation with trivia", as you're saying. We're just pointing out that this is not the only time a certain topic has been mentioned. Yes, I know we have the categories, but they're at the bottom of the page in a really small font. If you're new to this wiki, will you read the entire transcript or the talk? Many won't even scroll down after finishing the explanation, so how can they see that, or even the trivia section? But by adding it to the explanation, we are explaining that this is not the only comic of a certain category, and providing people with a quick link to another comic with a similar topic. In a way that is part of the explanation, as we answering people with the question "Is that the only comic with this topic?".
The trivia section is there for rather trivial things, such as pointing out typos, mentioning things that were caused in other websites because of a comic, or mentioning interesting facts about characters. I'm not sure if you've done the search, but if you haven't, do it and you'll understand what I'm saying, as I'm probably not the only one who thinks that. That's why I think that you are wrong, those were edited by other users, not by me, and they won't be influenced by my opinions. You're a new user who hasn't even gotten an account, I haven't been here for a long time compared with the admins, or some of the other users, so I'm looking at the other trivia sections, to see what others think, and they basically confirm my thoughts.
This wiki is here so that people can fully understand the comics by reading the explanations. The trivia is just there to point out other fun facts. If a comic is not the first of its type, then that should be mentioned in the explanation, not the trivia section. I've read your reply to my second post, if you have anything else to say then just tell me. And if we just can't agree on something, then we'll just have to take this problem to the admins.
