Welcome to explainxkcd! I'm glad to see I'm not the only person who messed around with the Kindle browser (and I was straight up trying to watch videos and use Javascript. on an lcd.) Concerning objects for scale, I think an improvement of fiducial marker is probably the best shot; the lede does say an object placed in the field of view of an image for use as a point of reference or a measure.
