==Explanation==
This is a reference to the phenomena known as redshift/blueshift.  Due to the Doppler effect, objects that are moving toward and observer appear bluer than they actually are (known as blueshift).  
Objects moving away from the observer (as in the case of a rear-view mirror in a moving vehicle) appear redder than they actually are (known as redshift), and thus the objects are bluer than they appear.
