Explanation
There are times in which the owner of a webcomic can not make a comic on time for the next scheduled update (for example, needing to attend to a family emergency). While there are some with a "buffer" of comics (that is, the comic artist would make several comics ahead of time) made in anticipation for these events, eventually, if the buffer runs out (or if there was no buffer in the first place), the artist might have to resort to uploading any kind of available art, possible including concept sketches.
Here, Randall parodies this situation with not only telling that he has to go to the doctor to get his thighs rotated (something possible medically unnecessary), but also uploads "concept art" of his comic. The punchline is that, since the characters are drawn in a stick figure style, there are no distinguishable features between the man here and most other males in the comic series. This doubles up with the fact that the stick figure would not have taken more than 10 seconds to draw, marking the fact that drawing (most) xkcd comics would not take much time to do normally, even after a visit to the doctor.

- It's just a joke. You can't get your thighs rotated (a parody of getting the tires of your car rotated), at least not in the United States. Smperron (talk)
- Given the general topic, and xkcd's penchant for math, "phi" is sometimes used to describe rotation, I believe. I think it is around the vertical axis, at least in some 3D modeling software. It is a stretch, but thigh and phi sound similar. Tryc (talk) 14:22, 17 June 2013 (UTC)

I thought the joke was about how the one-dimensionality of stick figures' limbs means thigh rotations have no apparent effect. Anyone else? STEMenjoyer (talk) 19:43, 14 May 2025 (UTC)
- Not a bad idea, but I wouldn't think so. The stick figure is just the character design the author's showing off. I assumed the author was not a stick figure. 216.12.61.138 18:00, 23 July 2025 (UTC)
