Usage

This template is compatible
with dark mode.

This template is used to embed the talk page at the bottom of every explanation. On every page other than the MediaWiki:mainpage, it prints three quick action buttons (add a comment, start a new topic, and refresh), a "Discussion" heading, and a box transcluding the page's talk page, or a prompt to start one.

Explanation Improvement Project tracking

This template also records the outcome of a page's nomination for This Week's Explanation for Improvement (twefi), using the following optional parameters:

  • twefi, either yes (the nomination went ahead and this page was featured) or no (the nomination did not go ahead).
  • date, a month and year if the nomination, such as September 2026, matching a section anchor on the project page. Both twefi and date are expected to be set once a nominated explanation has either been selected or failed.
  • old and new, optional permanent revision IDs shown as a link in the talk page banner to illustrate how much the explanation changed. Any combination works: if both are given, a diff link between the two revisions is shown; if only one is given, a permanent link to that revision is shown instead.
  • |1= through |10=, optional improvement suggestions shown as a collapsible iconed list inside both talk page banners, in the same format as {{incomplete}}. The list is collapsed by default. At least |1= must be given for the list to appear.

This tracking is currently limited, on purpose, to the single test page 172: Skateboarding is Not a Crime, so the feature can be checked before being rolled out to every comic. On that page only:

Nope. In most cases it performs fine. Here's just a few examples:
I don't know what is wrong with that talk page, but it appears to be happening only for that comic.

Switched to level-1 header

I was just on 1110 and I noticed that all the talk page sections were showing up as the same level as content sections... leaving a "Discussion" section with nothing actually in it. While level-1 is normally reserved for article titles, it doesn't really bother people usually, and I think it's preferable to the alternative... it's also somewhat fitting, since we are transcluding another page after all. (Another option would be configuring the "new section" button to create a level-3 header on talk pages... if that's possible.) PinkAmpersand (talk) 14:33, 30 April 2013 (UTC)

"add a comment!" button

I noticed that the link appended onto the "add a comment!" button is {{fullurl:{{TALKPAGENAME}}|action=edit}}. Wouldn't it make more sense to have it as {{fullurl:{{TALKPAGENAME}}|action=edit&section=new}}, as to create a new section by clicking that button? If someone just wants to add a comment without making a new section, the current add a comment button serves them well. Plus, headers and transclusion do not mix well, and we tend to avoid them in discussion pages unless we're not transcluding; see Time and its respective talk page. I agree with Davidy22. Most replies should not start a new section because users are just replying to an existing one. If some likes to open a new section it's still easy.--Dgbrt (talk) 17:26, 12 July 2013 (UTC)

TOC

Given our new comic descriptions are added by a bot, it wouldn't be too hard to add <noinclude>{{comic discussion}}</noinclude> instead of just {{comic discussion}}. Mark Hurd (talk) 03:05, 21 April 2015 (UTC)

Error in empty comments logic?

I could be wrong, but I believe there is an error in the empty comments logic added by User:Artyer in this revision. It looks like the template currently takes the magic word TALKPAGENAME and compares it to the "Please sign your posts with..." comment. Of course, TALKPAGENAME will never be equivalent to that and I suspect it should be looking at the content of the page pointed to by TALKPAGENAME instead. I believe that instead of:

{{#ifeq:{{TALKPAGENAME}}|<!--Please sign your posts with ~~~~--> |''No comments yet!''|{{#ifeq:{{TALKPAGENAME}}|<!--Empty-->

it should be:

{{#ifeq:{{:{{TALKPAGENAME}}}}|<!--Please sign your posts with ~~~~--> |''No comments yet!''|{{#ifeq:{{:{{TALKPAGENAME}}}}|<!--Empty-->

Add Class to template

Could someone add a class to the template (more specifically, change it to something like <div class="disctemp" style="border:1px solid grey; background:#eee; padding:1em;">? I've been working on a dark mode for the wiki to hopefully release publicly at some point, but this template and the Main Page are the only things in my way that i know of so far someone, i guess (talk) 01:57, 18 October 2023 (UTC)
