Squirrels are often used in xkcd comics and What if? posts as a way of avoiding reality. Although the first comic given below is 167: Nihilism, this was only a mention of Squirrels. The first comic with a drawing of squirrel was 635: Locke and Demosthenes.

Squirrels have been used elsewhere in works by Randall. They've been featured in the what if? articles Machine Gun Jetpack, Blood Alcohol, Keyboard Power, and Cannibalism, on his blog in the article The Laser Elevator, and in his book Thing Explainer, where they appear at least four time. They are most prominent in the chapter for Boxes that make clothes smell better (that is, washing machines and dryers), which features a drawing of a squirrel in the bottom right, below an arrow which says:

Wait
Why is this in your house?

The other squirrels in the book are under the pipe at the bottom of the explanation for Big tiny thing hitter, in the top of the Tree and of course in the Tree of life.
